United Kingdom Broadens Methanol Toxicity Advisory Roster with 11 Nations
British authorities has included eleven further countries to its official advisory roster about the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from adulterated beverages.
This updated travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the number of reported cases" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Only last month, the government had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after a number of high-profile incidents like the fatal demise of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that even tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or death within 12–48 hours.
Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol commonly employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for ingestion.
Although it is inherently formed during the production of beverages, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the refining procedure.
Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to save money, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to notice.
Government Advice for Tourists
Government official Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should be aware of the indicators of methanol contamination.
"When you are having drinks abroad, stick to well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," Falconer said.
"If something seems unusual, like a headache that's much more severe than typical or sight issues – get medical help immediately."
The full list of nations identified as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
