Female Victim Stabbed in Birmingham City Bus Shelter Attack Dies

The female victim stabbed repeatedly in the neck in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, police have confirmed.

The victim, aged 34 years, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 21:00 GMT Friday evening, West Midlands Police said.

The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, facing charges for the attack.

He was previously accused with attempted murder but following the woman's death charges were upgraded to include murder.

Law Enforcement Actions

The force said officers would be in the downtown area through Monday to offer reassurance, and investigators were supporting the woman's family.

Investigators are requesting for witnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers with a backpack.

Attack Site Details

The knife attack occurred near Bullring retail complex, across from the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.

Police said they classified it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said they were working to understand the motive behind.

Eyewitness Reports

An area worker, employed in the vicinity, described the emergency response when she finished her work period around 10 PM on Friday.

She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, adding that some of her colleagues heard loud disturbances at about 21:00.

"Many my colleagues use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk essentially, in the downtown area."

Another individual, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, mentioned visiting to Birmingham fairly regularly visiting his partner who lives in the city, and was concerned regarding the incident.

"It causes concern about my partner," he said.

"She doesn't drive employed at all of the big music venues... and to think something completely unprovoked [happened], you know, it's horrible."
