Around fifty vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Police report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found numerous other marked vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations show the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to solve the case" and have requested to the residents for details.
A senior official commented the incident rendered him without words and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the murder of nine people by a assailant aiming at residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
